Bullpup Coach Profiles

Kurt Kinnamon

         Coach Kurt Kinnamon is entering his 27th year as head coach of the McPherson Bullpups. In his previous 26 years the Bullpups have posted a record of 511-104, with six state titles (96,99,03,11,14, 15) and five state runner-up finishes (02,07,16,17,18). The Bullpups have reached the state tournament 18 times under Kinnamon’s tutelage. Kinnamon has coached five Bullpups that were named Mr. Basketball in Kansas (Aubrey Bruner 2003, Jordan Fithian 2004, Christian Ulsaker 2011, Drew Pyle 2016 and Ben Pyle 2018). In 2016, Kinnamon was named the National Federation of High Schools Midwest Sectional Coach of the Year.

         Kinnamon began his coaching career as an assistant coach for Roger Trimmell at his Alma Mater, McPherson College during the 1986-87 season. Kinnamon next served as MHS Alum Phil Anderson’s assistant at Lyons High School during the 1987-88 season. In 1988, Kinnamon was named assistant coach at McPherson High School coaching the freshman team from 1988-1993. In 1993 Kinnamon was named head coach at Canton-Galva High School and coached the Eagles from 1993-1995. In the spring of 1995 Kinnamon was named Head Boys Basketball Coach at McPherson High School.

         Kinnamon graduated from St.John High School in 1982. During his senior season the Tigers were the undefeated Class 2A champions. Kinnamon still holds the Kansas State High School career scoring average record at 28.2 points per game. Kinnamon continued his basketball career at Hutchinson Community College where the Blue Dragons finished 51-12 in his two years. During his sophomore year, Kinnamon led the Blue Dragons in assists. Kinnamon continued his career at McPherson College where he was named unanimous All-KCAC during his senior season and was also named McPherson College’s Athlete of the Year in 1987. While at
McPherson College Kinnamon also lettered in football, golf and track.
        Kinnamon has been married to the former Cindy Dell for 33 years. They have 3 children Dr. Kaley Kinnamon (28), Kyler Kinnamon(25) and Jace Kinnamon (21).

Dustan Kanitz

       Coach Dustan Kanitz is entering his 7th season as the head assistant/junior varsity basketball coach at McPherson High School. Kanitz has been an integral part of three state championships (11 ,14, 15) and nine state appearances as a coach for the Bullpups. As a player he was part of a state championship team (96) and two state appearances (96, 97).

        Kanitz began his coaching career with two years (04, 05) as an assistant middle school coach under Coach Doug Gayer. He then served one year as an assistant under Coach Chris Strathman with the MHS women’s program (06). In 2007, Kanitz joined his former high school coach Kurt Kinnamon and coached 15 years as his assistant (15-22) and freshman coach (07-15).

        Kanitz will also start his 17th year coaching track and field at MHS where he has coached six state champions in the jumping events.

        Kanitz graduated from McPherson High School in 1998 and attended Hutchinson Community College on a track and field scholarship until 2000. Kanitz finished college with BA and MA degrees from Wichita State University. Coach Kanitz spent 16 years teaching 6th and 7th grade literature at McPherson Middle School. Currently he works for Plexus Worldwide as an ambassador for health and wellness supplements.

        Kanitz and his wife Brooke, are the parents of four boys, Kreighton (16), Kaizer (14), Kash (9) and Kager (7).

Brandt Busse

            Coach Brandt Busse enters his second season as a member of the Bullpup staff. Coach Busse is yet another former player to join Coach Kurt Kinnamon’s staff. Busse also has two years of coaching experience as an assistant track and field coach for McPherson Middle School.

            Busse was a three sport standout at McPherson High School. Busse earned 2nd team (1999) and 1st team AVL honors as a wide receiver in football. In basketball Busse was a member of the 1999 state champion Bullpup squad. Busse also excelled in track and field at MHS, being a 4-year state qualifier and a state runner-up in 2000 in both the long jump and the 4X100 relay.

            Busse graduated from McPherson High School in 2001 and obtained his B.A. degree from McPherson College in 2007. Busse is currently a Paraprofessional at McPherson Middle School.

            Busse is the son of Ken and Debbie Busse. He has one sister Ashley. Busse has a daughter, Payton, who was born in 2014.

Paul Reichenberger

       Coach Paul Reichenberger enters his 1st season with the Bullpup basketball program. He will serve as an assistant varsity

coach. Reichenberger began his coaching career at McPherson Middle school, where he was an assistant to Coach Tyler Brown for the 7th grade boys in 2019. In 2020, Reichenberger was the head 7th grade boys basketball coach.

       Coach Reichenberger graduated from Maize South High School in 2015. While at Maize South High School, coach Reichenberger played basketball and tennis. During his senior year, Reichenberger's team finished 2nd in 5A basketball. 

      Coach Reichenberger graduated from Emporia State University with a degree in secondary education. After graduating, Reichenberger began teaching at McPherson Middle School in the fall of 2019 and has been at MMS for the past three years. At MMS, Reichenberger teaches technology elective classes. He also coaches boys and girls tennis at McPherson Middle School. 

      Reichenberger is married to the former Annie Reinert and they reside in McPherson.
